Since April 2022, Amy Nelson has been a dedicated member of the Batavia United Way (BUW) Board of Directors, combining her passion for education and community service to make a meaningful impact. In addition to her role as the Community Outreach Coordinator for Batavia Public School District 101, Amy brings her unwavering commitment to building a stronger Batavia through her work with BUW.

Why Amy Serves
Amy’s heart for service stems from her deep appreciation for the Batavia United Way’s mission and its ability to support people of all ages. “Batavia United Way helps families and individuals in so many ways through the variety of their programming,” she shares. “I love being
able to serve my community by giving back to such an amazing organization.”

A Lasting Impact
For Amy, Batavia United Way’s reach is both broad and transformative. From connecting local organizations with resources to running programs that directly support families in hardship, BUW provides essential care and hope. “Batavia United Way makes one of the greatest impacts in the community by supporting within Batavia as well as outside of Batavia,” she notes.

Passion Projects
As an educator, Amy finds a special joy in BUW programs that uplift children. She highlights the Success by 6 Scholarship Program, which ensures preschoolers in need can receive a strong start in their educational journey. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library, another initiative close to her heart, puts books in the hands of children from birth to kindergarten, fostering a love for reading and learning. But Amy’s enthusiasm doesn’t stop with education-focused initiatives. Batavia United Way’s Adopt-a-Family program is another favorite of hers, bringing hope and joy to families during the holiday season with the community sponsoring families in need. “There is nothing better than bringing some joy to children at the holiday time,” she says. “The Adopt-a-Family program not only brings joy but brings hope to those experiencing hardship in the Batavia school district.”

A Message for the Community
Amy firmly believes that community support is the foundation of BUW’s success. “It truly takes a community coming together to care for one another—and Batavia does just that,” she says. “Batavia United Way is one of the key partners that families within Batavia look to for help and assistance and we can’t do it alone.” She encourages others to be part of the “village” that lifts up Batavia’s families, emphasizing that everyone’s contribution is vital in completing the circle of care.

Personal Growth and Gratitude
Serving on the BUW board has been a transformative experience for Amy, enhancing her compassion and problem-solving skills. “When you get the passionate Batavia United Way Board together, I feel as though they could problem-solve any issue and help make a
difference,” she reflects.

Amy’s roots in Batavia run deep—she’s been a proud resident since 1970. Raising her children here and sharing her love for the community with her husband Brad, a “converted” Geneva Viking turned Batavia Bulldog, has been one of her greatest joys.
